China: development of genetically modified sweet tomatoes

CRISPR gene-editing technology has been used by Chinese researchers to produce sweeter varieties of tomatoes by increasing glucose and fructose levels by 30 percent, without changing the size. The aim of this development is to improve the flavour and attractiveness of the fruit to consumers, with possibilities for using the technique for other fruits such as apples and pears.
