The Trump administration has announced tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China, aimed at curbing illegal immigration and drug trafficking. These tariffs include 25% on Canada and Mexico (10% for Canadian energy imports) and 10% on China, with a 30-day deferral for Canada and Mexico. The U.S. relies heavily on imports for potassium (K), with over 90% of consumption coming from abroad, mainly from Canada (80% of imports). The tariffs could increase potassium prices by more than $100 per tonne. The tariff impacts on imports of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) will be more limited. The import of these two products is much smaller. In 2023, total fertilizer imports into the U.S. were valued at more than $10 billion, with more than $5 billion coming from Canada. The tariffs could lead to higher costs for U.S. farmers, affecting prices in the short and long term. It should be remembered that the main suppliers of phosphorus are Peru and Morocco.
