At the start of the third quarter of 2024, the FAO and WFP (World Food Programme) warned UN agencies about an imminent food crisis, particularly in South Sudan, Chad, Yemen, Syria, and other Central African countries. The causes include extreme climatic conditions such as El Niño and rising food commodity costs.

According to these UN agencies, floods caused by this weather phenomenon will threaten Somalia, Mali, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Sudan at the beginning of 2025.

In addition to natural causes, civil wars, poor government policies, and social inequalities contribute to the crisis. Without urgent aid, the FAO and WFP report predicts unprecedented famine and severe food insecurity in this region.
