The U.S. will continue to buy agricultural products to supply some of the poorest countries receiving U.S. aid, the Department of Agriculture announced. Purchases of products such as corn, soybeans and wheat — destined for poor countries — will continue under the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education, Childhood Nutrition Program and Food for Progress Program, the USDA said. The statement puts an end to fears that the program could be halted as part of a review of federal spending by the Trump administration.
U.S. purchases on the global market help feed millions of citizens in the poorest countries, some of whom are torn apart by war. In 2023, international food aid programs received $422 million to provide commodities, including wheat, rice, and black beans to countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Lesotho, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Mauritania, according to the latest USDA report.
