The latest review for the Malabo Declaration, adopted five years ago, is reporting mixed results. According to the biannual Declaration review, published on 10 February by the African Union (AU), only four African countries are on course to meet their commitments by 2025. There were twenty of them in 2017.
The four countries are Rwanda, Morocco, Mali and Ghana. These countries have either reached or exceeded the performance indicator of 6.66 established by AU experts. While the report shows that scores for thirty-six countries made significant progress between 2017 and 2019, it specifies that, overall, there is some way to go for the continent as a whole, which scores an average of 4.03.
As a reminder, the Malabo commitments include an objective of 10% of public investment in agriculture, eliminating child hunger and malnutrition, reducing poverty by half and tripling inter-African trade for agricultural products and services.
