In the San Francisco laboratory of bio-tech startup Brightseed, computers are analysing thousands of tiny plant samples to discover and extract ‘supernutrients’ or natural compounds. These supernutrients are then harvested and added to foods to improve consumer health. “We are actually able to transform food into medicine”, explains Sofia Elizondo, Brightseed’s co-founder and director of operations. “We know how to cultivate plants which are clinically proven to be both nutritious and targeted at specific health needs. In this way, we are not only turning the traditional healthcare paradigm on its head, by giving priority to prevention, but also by reinvigorating the entire supply chain.”
